My 10 Favourite IELTS Expressions

1. To some extent — partly, but not completely.
   “Do you think governments should spend more money on space exploration?”
   ‘I do, but only to some extent. Space exploration can lead to valuable technological advances, but it should not take priority over essential services such as healthcare and education.’
   
   
2. It comes down to — the most important reason or deciding factor is.
   “Why do some people enjoy living in cities while others prefer the countryside”
   ‘I think it ultimately comes down to personality. Some people enjoy the fast pace of cities, whereas others value the peace and quiet of the countryside..’
   
   
3. For instance — for example.
   “Why do some people enjoy learning English?”
   ‘There are lots of different reasons. For instance, some people need English for their careers, while others learn it because they enjoy travelling.’
   
   
4. Having said that — although what I have just said is true, there is another side to consider.
   “Do you think working from home is better than working in an office”
   ‘Working from home offers more flexibility and saves commuting time. Having said that, going into the office can make it easier to collaborate and build relationships.’
   
   
5. On the one hand / On the other hand — a way to present two sides of an argument.
   “Do you think children should have homework every day?”
   ‘On the one hand, homework helps children practise what they learn in class. On the other hand, too much homework leaves them with less time to relax or spend with their families.’
   
   
6. If — used to introduce a condition or possible situation.
   “Do you think people spend too much time on their phones?”
   ‘If you use your phone for work or study, it is understandable that you will spend several hours on it. However, if you constantly check social media for no real reason, it can become a bad habit.’
   
   
7. The thing is — used to introduce an explanation or clarify what you really mean.
   “Do you think people are healthier nowadays than they were in the past?”
   ‘The thing is, it is difficult to give a simple yes or no answer. Healthcare has improved, but many people also lead more sedentary lifestyles.’
   
   
8. It depends — meaning the answer changes according to a particular factor or situation.
   “Is it better to work for a large company or a small company?”
   ‘It depends on what you are looking for. A large company may offer more opportunities for promotion, while a smaller company may provide a more relaxed working environment.’
   
   
9. Tend to —  happens often, but not always.
   “Why do some people prefer shopping online?”
   ‘People tend to shop online because it is usually more convenient. They can compare prices, read reviews and have everything delivered to their door.’
   
   
10. Strike a balance — find a compromise between two different ideas or situations.
    “Should children spend more time studying or playing?”
    ‘I think it is important to strike a balance. Studying helps children develop important skills, but they also need time to play, relax and socialise.’
